Abstract : In the context of control theory, the control variable q(t) takes a solution initially at the origin in the (t,x)-plane to the point (a,0) while meeting the lower bound in (2) arbitrarily closely. We extend this inequality in two directions. First, we generalize the boundary value problem (1) itself to certain nonlinear equations. Secondly, we minimize more general integrals than the one in (2). Among other things, these results permit us to obtain new sufficiently criteria for the stability of Hill's equation.
