Abstract : This paper describes the subpopulation analyses that will appear in a forthcoming report on the Profile of American Youth. In 1980, the Department of Defense and the Military Services, in cooperation with the Department of Labor, sponsored a large-scale research project to assess the vocational aptitudes of American youth. A national probability sample of approximately 12,000 young men and women, selected from participants in the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of Youth Labor Force Behavior, were administered the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The results will be analyzed to identify subgroup differences in test performance. The subgroup variables selected for analysis are age, sex, race/ethnicity, level of education, socioeconomic status, and geographic region. Subgroup comparisons will be made on the basis of Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) scores, ASVAB composite scores, and an estimate of reading ability. The ASVAB scores will also be used to estimate the numbers and percent of 1980 youth population subgroups eligible for military enlistment, based on 1981 Service aptitude standards. (Author)
