Abstract : The growth of short fatigue cracks, where the Paris law does not appear to hold, is discussed. In this regime the mechanisms of fatigue damage are of importance to an understanding of the role of microstructure in affecting growth rate. The paper reviews the operative mechanisms and their effect on short crack growth.
