Abstract : Manual control behaviour with an RMS-error-criterion is considered a good approximation to control behaviour with similar symmetric error-weighting-functions, but not asymmetric ones. In order to test this, a compensatory tracking task with a second error condition is defined. Several experiments show that nonlinear (asymmetric) tracking-behaviour arises under these conditions. The adaptation of the control-behaviour to the payoff-conditions can be considered an instance of decision-making on the basis of an expected-utility model. (Author)
