Abstract : Ion bombardment under normal vacuum conditions is commonly known to deposit carbon on the target surface. It has been observed that such effects during ion mixing of Cr layers on bearing steels may encourage pitting corrosion of an ion mixed surface. Xe(+) was found to incorporate O, and Cr(+) was found to incorporate C during ion mixing of Cr films deposited on AISI 52100 steel. (Author)
