Abstract : This paper reviews some of the methodologies which have been used for developing design loadings in remote areas of eastern Canada and the northwestern United States. How loadings are expressed in terms of return period probabilities and the possible impact of the very long lines crossing two or more independent weather regimes are discussed. Finally, the importance of early involvement of meteorological evaluations and on-going observation programs are stressed.
