Abstract : Soil-structure interaction significantly affects the loads acting on buried shelters subjected to nearby explosions. Recent research has improved our understanding of this complex phenomenon and led to a new design method for buried shelters. This method recognizes the coupling between dynamic response of a buried structure and the loading exerted on it by the neighboring soil. It is simple to use, inexpensive and sufficiently accurate for most underground shelter designs. (Author)
