Abstract : The selection of a suitable solvent for water-insoluble anthelminthic drugs is one of the major problems in the study of the mode of action of anthelminthic drugs. Generally a suitable solvent should have maximum solubility and least toxicity to the parasites and/or biological models. DMSO has been used as a drug solvent, particularly for benzimidazole derivatives, but the effect of DMSO on the metabolism of the parasites hitherto remains unstudied. Therefore, the present study was undertaken on a parasite model, Avitellina lahorea, and some aspects of the carbohydrate metabolism were studied in presence of DMSO, because mebendazole (a benzimidazole derivative) specifically affects the carbohydrate metabolism.
