Abstract : The development of realistic numerical simulations of spacecraft-environment interactions in low-orbit conditions appears likely to be a more difficult task than it has been in high-orbit conditions. At the same time, carefully chosen combinations of existing simulation methods show some promise of being able to cope with this situation, at least in two dimensions and possibly in three dimensions. Simple large-voltage symmetric-sheath probe theories, which have been used to provide preliminary estimate of spacecraft voltages, contain serious limitations for use in making more precise calculations.
