Abstract : Exploitation of space for military purposes will increase in the Shuttle era when large, high-powered space systems will be deployed by military astronauts. The space environment will be a critical factor in the deployment, operation, and survivability of these new systems. A major concern is that a new system might be fielded in space with a costly environmental failure mode engineered into the basic design. The technology program described here addresses space environmental interactions on large-dimension high-power satellites to provide technology solutions that will insure against potential system failure.
