Abstract : Operational aircraft representing the 1960 and 1970 technology time frames were tested in the Full-Level Lightning Aircraft System Hardening (FLLASH) program at Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the spring and summer of 1982. The direct-strike lightning threat was simulated and peak injection currents of 180 kA were achieved. A methodology was developed during this program which enables the aircraft designer to perform trade-off studies at very early design stages involving avionics packages, airframe configurations, and various threat scenarios.
