Abstract : When exposed to pulsed ionizing radiation, quartz oscillator crystals can exhibit transient acoustic loss (Q-1, resistance) increases and transient frequency shifts. Although the transient resistance increase is usually observed in unswept quartz, resistance changes and transient frequency shifts have been seen in swept quartz. The transient frequency shifts in swept material are caused by the radiation-induced conversion of the A1-OH center into the A1-hole center and by dynamic thermal effects. For the A1-OH conversion process, the subsequent decay is due to the return of the proton by diffusion along the Z-axis channels.
