Abstract : A fire prevention system for telephone exchange offices in the case of tunnel accidents is presented. Cables installed in tunnels have the potential of spreading fire from tunnels to buildings when a fire breaks out. In order to reduce this possibility, the Fire Service law requires that cables installed in tunnels have sufficient fire resistance to prevent them from spreading fire from tunnels to buildings. Fire tests are conducted as the initial task in developing a test method for determining structural details. These tests provide data on the flame propagation characteristics of tunnel cables in a simulated fireproof wall between tunnels and buildings. Fireproof wall design is based on information obtained from field surveys. Newly developed systems have already been introduced in telephone exchange offices, which have required fireproof walls to protect against fire spreading. (Author)
