Abstract : Measures applied to the autopilot of the TORNADO to ensure survivability of the aircraft after failures during automatic low level flying are presented. Apart from redundant equipment, these measures include hardware and software limiters to minimize the effect of failures upon the aircraft, hardware and software monitors to detect and isolate failures, emergency procedures to initiate recovery manoeuvres, as well as efficient testing of software.
