Abstract : There is no contractor at this time, in this Nation who can fabricate all the components needed for a major weapons system and deliver it in the time required and within cost limits. Therefore, the prime contractor must subcontract out certain of the components and parts needed for the system assembly. How do contractors make this division regarding the components and parts to be made versus those to be bought? This paper reviews the background for this area providing the theory and the practices as found during a recent study for the Air Force Business Research Management Center. (Author)
