Abstract : In the coming years, American product quality will continue to be severely challenged in the world marketplace. We have lost much business and many jobs to foreign suppliers. Our nation's industry has suffered excessive loss of profits due to waste of materials and resources. Although foreign suppliers at one time held a substantial price advantage, this is no longer true in many instances. We are losing markets because of quality and reliability deficiencies. For the most part, American management has not fully grasped the impact of this quality challenge. They fail to recognize that effective quality control and assurance systems contribute significantly to profits, along with a product that conforms to specifications. Certain tasks are clearly defined for American industry and the military establishment; high quality performance is essential. This paper is concluded with what is needed if we are to regain our position of leadership in the world marketplace. (Author)
