Abstract : A bivariate C superscript 1 quadratic B-spline basis for the space of C superscript 1 piecewise polynomials with total degree two on a crisscross triangulation is given. This basis has very important algebraic, geometric and approximatic properties, and can be used in a variety of applications. In particular, it can be used adaptively in pattern recognition, image processing and data reduction. In image restoration, for example, it gives much better pictures than the tensor product splines using the same discrete data. (Author)
