Abstract : The process of applying robotics to the battlefield appears to be, to a certain degree, concept driven. That is, a concept for a robotic system is generated, then its value to the military is assessed. Alternatively, detailed applications may be specified, then the concepts are generated. Neither approach represents the thorough, integrated procedure necessary for the military. A different approach is to examine the military application of robotics from a technological viewpoint. This paper considers two aspects of robotics technology: the basic technologies involved in the application of robotics, and the application process itself.
