Abstract : This paper is a summary of results of some recent analytical studies of dynamic, steadystate crack propagation in linear viscoelastic material. Closed form solutions are presented for the problems of a semiinfinite, antiplane shear crack propagating with constant speed in an infinite general linear viscoelastic body and in a layer of finite thickness. For both boundary value problems, and for a general class of shear modulus, the solutions obtained exhibit a universal structure that depends in a simple way upon the time dependent shear modulus and crack speed. The forms for the solutions are convenient for the extraction of qualitative and quantitative information about the dependence of the stress field in the body upon the loading, the crack speed and the shear modulus.
