Abstract : In 1983 the Air Force accepted the new Army combat doctrine 'Airland Battle' as a basis for joint tactical planning. This paper reviews this doctrine, examining the role of the Air Force and argues that in order for this new concept to be successful, a new kind of Air Force member with certain identifiable abilities and attitudes will be required in a battlefield of the future. The paper goes on to examine some of the implications of this hypothesis from the perspective of both the individual warrior and the combat team, and concludes by identifying some of the potential consequences to the Air Force at the organizational level in areas of accession and training of new personnel.
