Abstract : Numerous prior studies have shown relationships between individual soldier characteristics (such as general and specific mental abilities, education, etc.) and individual performance. However, few studies have demonstrated a valid relationship between individual crewmember characteristics and crew or weapon system performance. This study examined relationships between individual characteristics of tank commanders (N=166) and gunners (N=165) and performance in a crew drill - Table VIII gunnery. Results suggested that for gunners, Mechanical ability and experience related to crew performance, while for tan commanders overall mental ability related to crew performance. Results could be used in assignment of soldiers to these crew positions. (Author)
