Abstract : Future space applications will require developing high performance star trackers to provide with either high accurate attitude reference or measurement for spaceborne platforms. The achievable characteristics such as detectable star maximum magnitude, allowable sky background radiance, angular resolution, time resolution depend on detectors intrinsic physical characteristics and internal operation. The aim of this paper is, on one hand, to give performance characteristics which can be achieved with image dissector tube star trackers based on equipment manufactured for IPS/Spacelab and Exosat satellite, on the other hand, to make an assessment of their advantages and drawbacks with respect to equipment based on solid state devices of charge transfer type. The analysis of the performance is presented versus the intrinsic characteristics of the detectors and the technological constraints related to their use. (Author)
