Abstract : Department of Defense requirements to use the higher order language Ada will create challenges to developers of military software that encompass these major concerns: (1) developing a core of Ada software personnel, (2) achieving productivity and software gains that have been targeted as Ada life-cycle objectives, and (3) transitioning to a language that embodies a capability to express software solutions eloquently, clearly, reliably and efficiently. Ada is more than a programming language, it is the basis for a modern perspective of software design and engineering. The IEEE working group on Ada as a PDL has been addressing the issues involved with the use of Ada as a design mechanism for nearly two years. This working group has recently generated a draft guideline that addresses the key issues. The extent of industry's involvement with Ada PDLs and the status and final form of the IEEE product will substantially impact both the acceptance of the Ada language and the efficiency and correctness of its use.
