Abstract : The occurrence of moisture sorption hysteresis in wood, and several proposed theories for explaining it, are discussed. Hysteresis is shown to be beneficial when wood is in use because it reduces changes in moisture content (lower effective slope of the sorption isotherm) and therefore in dimensions (lower humidity expansion coefficient) associated with environmental humidity changes.
