Abstract : Some advantages of printed circuit antenna designs are low fabrication cost, conformability, tolerance control, and improved reproducibility. The microstrip patch radiator is one of the more popular printed circuit elements used in applications not requiring large bandwidth. Many classical antenna elements may, however, be manufactured using printed circuit techniques giving the antenna designer several options to best satisfy electrical design goals while retaining the advantages of printed circuit manufacturing. A printed circuit cavity backed slot radiator suitable for airborne-phased array applications is described in this paper. It has approximately twice the bandwidth of a microstrip patch having the same thickness.
