Abstract : The basis for selection of a strapdown inertial system for short to medium range jet transports is discussed. Inertial data requirements and associated performance requirements are shown for commercial airplanes. Good performance at low cost and high reliability are key requirements of inertial technology application to commercial airplanes which do not have a long range navigation need. The Honeywell laser inertial reference system (IRS) selected by Boeing for the 757/767/737 airplanes is described, along with airplane installation and interface details.
