Abstract : The design of controllers for complex structures is a challenging problem with an expanding range of applications which include the control of large scale space structures. The purpose of the control system may be to enable the structure to carry out a specific task or to combat vibration. Two examples are the attitude control of a space telescope and the control of vibration in helicopters. Feedback control techniques are often used because of their great flexibility and insensitivity to unexpected disturbances. However such controllers usually require knowledge of the displacements and velocities of the significant modes of the structure and direct measurement of these may be impossible. A theoretical solution to this problem is to construct estimates of these variables from a modest number of sensor signals by using an auxiliary system known as an observer.
