Abstract : A superparametric parabolic shell element specially adapted for dynamic conditions is utilized to anlayze the vibration characteristics and dynamic stresses in a hollow aerofoil and symmetrical shell type turbine blades. The efficiency of the element developed is investigated and is shown to be superior to other available elements. Various results are presented to establish the dependence of the frequency on the geometric parameters. Relative principal stress distributions on a hollow turbine blade, for various modes of vibration, are presented indicating the variation of the point of maximum dynamic stresses with mode order. These points are the critical points where the fatigue cracks may originate leading to the final destruction. (Author)
