Abstract : This paper considers the effect on bending wave energy transmission in an infinite beam of constraints in the form of nonlinear force/displacement or force/velocity relationships. A point receptance method is used, whereby the linear (Euler beam theory) equations for the beam in the absence of the constraints are used to derive explicit expressions for displacement or velocity at the points where constraints are to be applied, in terms of applied forces at these points. Substitution of the chosen forms of these forces then lead to (nonlinear) integral equations determining displacement or velocity at the constraint points. In this way the infinite number of degrees of freedom of the original problem have been reduced to a number equal only to the number of nonlinear constraints, for numerical solution.
