Abstract : The structural strength of tall buildings is often provided by a coupled frame-wall system with the frame supporting most of the vertical loads and the horizontal loads shared in some measure between the frame and the wall. For design purposes, the knowledge of the sher forces and bending moments in the frame and in the wall is of the utmost importance and also the knowledge of the displacements due to horizontal actions. The main sources of horizontal forces in buildings are wind and earthquake excitations. This paper will consider the response of coupled frame-wall systems to earthquake motions although, with minor alterations, the procedure may also be applied to wind excitations.
