Abstract : A distributed system can be constructed so that modifications can be made while it is running. Dynamic modifications include simple changes in the code, modifications in the representation of data objects and restructuring of individual data objects on entire modules. Applied to a heterogeneous computer network, coexistence of local implementations allows optimal performance in each node. Special care must be taken that modification of one part of the running system does not cause an avalanche of changes in programs that use it. (Author)
