Abstract : The response of the gastrointestinal tract to physical and psychological aggression is initially characterized by an inhibition of its motor and secretory activity. The subsequent response is highly variable and depends on the type and intensity of the stimulus. In the present review, we will consider only the effect of ionizing radiation and of surgical trauma on gastrointestinal motility and secretion.
