Abstract : This paper is concerned with some issues in cognitive psychology that are relevant to the general question of what artificial intelligence techniques can do toward the solution of problems concerning equipment training and maintenance. Three topics will be discussed. The first is the nature of expertise in electronics, which is not very well understood. The second topic is the relation between instructions and expertise. The third topic is technical documentation.
