Abstract : Recently, the Army has completed a systematic task analysis of its 352 enlisted occupational specialists. This occupational task analysis was accomplished: (1) to systematically, objectively, and empirically identify the critical task requirements of occupational specialists, (2) to validate these tasks through field observation, (3) to develop and validate a physical capacity test battery to identify the individual's strength and stamina capacities and predict performance on job related tasks or criterion performance tasks (CPT), (4) to document the expected increment in these capacities as a function of the initial entry training program, and (5) to develop physical standards for the accession and assignment of soldiers and match them to occupational requirements. Matching the physical requirements of the job with the physical capacities of the recruit will not only insure individual readiness, but will reduce costs associated with attrition, injury, and that associated with recruiting and training replacements.
