Abstract : N-Hexane is a volatile, lipophilic solvent that is readily absorbed by the pulmonary, oral, and dermal routes. It is rapidly excreted unchanged in expired air, and is excreted in urine in the form of metabolites. n-Hexane is metabolized by a complex pathway that leads to a variety of oxidation products, one of which is 2.5-hexanedione. The neurotoxicity of n-hexane is related to its metabolism to 2,5-hexanedione. n-Hexane is the least potent number of a series of neurotoxic hexacarbons.
