Abstract : In discussing the topic of the toxicity of complex mixtures, a definition of what we mean by complex is required. I shall consider any mixture of toxicants containing two or more components as complex. Statisticians have proposed various mathematical models to describe a number of types of toxicological action that mixtures may exhibit and I shall touch on these briefly. In addition, It will outline some studies on two component air pollutant mixtures and also another study with a mixture containing several hundred components to show how toxicologists, in fact, deal with these problems and to what extent they refer to these mathematical models in current practice.
