Abstract : Until the mid 70's, visual simulation had been limited to small areas - primarily airfields and aircraft carriers - and complexity of the data bases was quite restricted due to the limited capacity of the image generators. Today training simulators require realistic terrain and gaming areas encompassing hundreds of thousands of miles, yet need accurate highly detailed 'insets' for nap-of-the-earth flights. This paper will discuss improvements in data base generation technology which have allowed gaming area realism to keep pace with rapid advancement of Image Generator capabilities. (Author)
