Abstract : A series of tests were performed to develop quick reacting water deluge fire suppressant systems for use in munition manufacturing processes. Each test program was successful in demonstrating that a rapidly activated water deluge system can be effectively used to suppress and extinguish propellant/explosive fires and combat extraneous secondary fires that may occur from flying debris after and explosion. Two distinctly different types of deluge system will be discussed as applicable to munition fire protection. The first, hardened water deluge system, where the system is more heavily constructed and the water delivery lines are placed at ground or below ground level to withstand the effects from blast and flying fragments. The second, modified conventional deluge system to extinguish propellant fires before they can spread and transcend into a description. Application of these fire suppressant systems utilizing ultra-violet detection to sense a fire, can significantly improve safety at a minimum cost. Both system can also be in any plants processing hazardous materials where quick react detection is necessary and in certain instances where the system has to be operable after an accidental explosion.
