Abstract : The chemicals used in the manufacture of pyrotechnics are potentially hazardous materials. Used alone, or in blends with one or more additional chemical components, they require characteristics to assure maximum safety in weight, drying, transfer, mixing, consolidation, or final assembly operations. We study the safety characteristics of all pyrotechnic components prior to use in manufacture. The results of these studies will be presented. During the drying, weigh-up, physical blending and final mixing of the formulation during screening, granulating and mixing, heat generation from drying and blending and generation of static charges inherent in the handling of such materials. Engineering, Production, Safety and Quality management must know to what degree hazards exist so that materials can be processed with a minimum of risk to personnel and damage to property. Several different tests are used to establish the degree of hazard involved. These include impact sensitivity, friction sensitivity, electrostatic discharge and autoignition. Since test apparatus is not uniform throughout the industry, brief descriptions of our test equipment will be given. Information gained on the original chemical constituent at each step in the manufacturing process will also be presented.
