Abstract : This investigation was conducted to modify the M10 propellant expulsion charge for the M483A1/M509A1 projectiles in order to gain cost advantages, improved safety characteristics, and longer shelf life. The paper will describe the selection of a replacement propellant and the tests undertaken to indicate its suitability, extrusion characteristics, ballistics performance, and the affects of temperature and different charge weights on ballistic performance. In addition, details will be given on the need to redesign the propellant charge bag based on tests involving exposure to extreme temperature and high humidity cycles and the effect on the ballistic performance of M10 propellant following exposure to these severe environmental conditions.
