Abstract : Liquid hydrogen for the Space Shuttle main engines is presently produced by a natural gas steam-reforming plant in New Orleans and transported to Kennedy Space Center via vacuum insulated tanker trucks. To reduce overall costs of launch operations, NASA has proposed the construction and operation of facility which would use coal to produce liquid hydrogen. This facility would also produce gaseous nitrogen, sulfuric acid, and electrical and thermal energy. This concept is called Polygeneration. There were three main environmental issues concerning the operation of this facility. They were air emissions, water emissions, and solid waste disposal. These issues have been addressed using innovative design solutions which either eliminate the emissions or produce saleable products rather than waste streams.
