Abstract : Rapid progress has been made during the past 15 years in the development of various candidate technologies for aircraft displays. Many of these have distinct advantages in power consumption, weight, and depth which make them promising candidates for limited panel space. Conversely, the intrinsic capabilities and limitations of these technologies must be carefully compared with the visual task requirements of the aircrew to avoid inappropriate selections and designs. This paper evaluates some of these technological parameters that are critical to visual task compatibility and illustrates pertinent visual data for this type of analysis.
