Abstract : Future aircraft equipment fits and flight profiles are threatening to overload the operator's ability to accept and process the information presented to him, as direct results of an increase in information volume and a reduction in time available. It is assumed that, for the foreseeable future, the primary modality for information display in the cockpit will remain visual, while control inputs to the system will be mutable in modality (for example, speech, input may, in the next 5-10 years, replace some manual control functions). With this in mind, a number of topics relating to visually displayed information will be briefly considered: (1) Visual search and system location cueing, (2) Design of spatial location cueing symbology, (3) Selective attention and display coding conventions, 4) Design procedures for new tactical symbology, 5) Information integration in flight information displays, 6) The costs of attention switching in the flying task. In conclusion, some new tactical information display concepts will be discussed, and areas of research necessary to support future aircraft displays and systems highlighted.
