Abstract : Aircraft head-up display (HUD) standardisation should be guided by empirical evidence from studies of operator performance. Four experiments are reported on the effects of HUD pitch scale design variables on pitch and roll recovery tasks. Design variables are identified that have significant effects on decision-making performance. Recommendations are made for HUD pitch scale standardisation. The findings are discussed in terms of cognitive processes involved in the perception of complex multidimensional visual stimuli.
