Abstract : In this paper, the problem of determining the mass, stiffness and damping parameters of a structure from measured modal response data is addressed. The modal mass shape and damping parameters are determined from both receptance and dynamic stiffness approaches. Complex normal modes are used in the representation of non-proportional damping, localized in specific parts of a structure, whereas real normal modes are sufficient to represent the behavior of a system with damping proportional to stiffness. The inversion of the receptance matrix to obtain the dynamic stiffness matrix, and some unique properties of the elements of the dynamic stiffness matrix, are discussed. Two examples, one from dynamics of a discrete structure and the other for a rotor-bearing system, illustrate the methodology. (Author)
