Abstract : Error control codes having modest error correction capabilities and additional error detection features often are used beyond their correction abilities to force retransmission of messages under severe channel conditions. High noise or interference levels can cause a significant fraction of messages to experience multiple transmissions in order to provide successful delivery. To improve the reliability of message delivery, a second level of error control is examined. A nonbinary Reed-Solomon code treats each detected character error as an erasure: the location of the error is known, but the identify of the transmitted symbol is not. The decoder then fills in symbols which the channel has erased. The performance of such an error control scheme in a typical application is studied, and the assumed scheme is shown to provide significant improvement for a modest change. (Author)
