Abstract : This report is about computational methods in the detection of unknown substances by means of their spectra. The method of least-squares is used to test whether an unknown spectrum is one of a previously-stored set of spectra of compounds known to be of interest. The requirements are that this be done with as small and simple a program as possible and still get reasonable certainty of detection. The programs are first described, then tested by simulation. The results suggest that the procedure is feasible although further improvement is probably desirable. (Author)
