Abstract : Several new hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) resins have been developed. These products range in viscosity (molecular weight) from 11,500 cps at 25C (Mn 3350) to 1000 cps properties, is presented. Poly bd R-45M resin, a hydroxyl terminated homopolymer of 1,3-butadiene, is a primary component in the binder for many solid propellant systems. This resin has many desirable properties, including low temperature flexibility, relatively low viscosity, excellent stress and strain characteristics, and relatively high solids loading capability. Currently available Poly bd resins have a Mn of about 2800 and a viscosity of 6000 cps at 25 C. Their use in propellant systems requiring either a higher or a lower molecular weight/viscosity is not feasible. A new series of HTPB resins has been developed in anticipation of broadening HTPB resin aerospace applications, while retaining or improving the mechanical properties of the binder system. This new series of resins varies significantly in both molecular weight and viscosity. In addition, elastomers produced from the resins exhibit a wide range of mechanical properties. These variations will give the propellant formulator more flexibility in designing a propellant system of optimum properties.
