Abstract : A method is developed for predicting damage near the port surface of a pressurized burning grain. Since both the stress state and the damage require a finite length of time to develop, the critical region in the grain must necessarily be located at some distance into the propellant web. This location is found by maximizing the cumulative damage with respect to imbedded distance. Piecewise linear damage functions are assumed to be available. A closed-form solution is found for the case of a plane-strain cylindrical grain and extended for generically similar configured grains. The calculation procedure for maximum cumulative damage is simple and can be used for preliminary analysis purposes, or the general equations can be incorporated into a more sophisticated time-stepping nonlinear response routine.
