Abstract : Free electron lasers place demands on optics which require extensions of the state of the art in both substrates and coatings. Further effort is needed to counteract the sources of energy deposition into the optics, and to deal effectively with the resulting thermal effects. This paper reviews the scaling and possible mechanisms of single photon damage, and discuss the thermal phenomena expected in FEL optics.
